Insomnia

Insomnia can appear in several forms:

  • Difficulty falling asleep
  • Difficulty staying asleep
  • Waking up too early
  • Poor quality sleep

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) estimates that 30 percent of adults suffer from insomnia. Many in this group are women and older adults. Insomnia is more than just one or several poor nights’ sleep, which everyone has from time to time. Insomnia is a pattern of too little sleep for several weeks that may not go away on its own. Stress, hormonal levels, other medical conditions and even some medications can cause insomnia. People who suffer from insomnia are often tired during the day, grumpy and/or fall asleep during the day.
