Links between Sleep and the Heart Spur Partnership
Three medical groups band together for better health
March 29, 2006 – PHOENIX – In concert with Sleep Apnea Awareness Day, REM Medical, Tri-City Cardiology Consultants and Pulmonary Consultants announce their joint venture as a major step in further improving patient services and increasing the team’s breadth of capabilities in the research, diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders. According to the National Sleep Foundation, over 18 million Americans suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) alone, a condition that causes brief interruptions of breathing during sleep due to a collapsing of the upper airway, and is just one of the more than 85 known sleep disorders. Lack of awareness has resulted in only five percent of OSA sufferers being diagnosed and treated.
Tri-City Cardiology and Pulmonary Consultants are two leading clinical specialist practices in the Phoenix area, lending advanced cardio-pulmonary sleep medicine capabilities to the newly formed REM Medical joint venture, which operates clinics in Scottsdale and Mesa focused solely on sleep disorders. This partnership will enable REM Medical to stay at the forefront of sleep medicine by providing focused care and creating the leading sleep medicine institute in Phoenix committed to delivering successful patient outcomes.
Sleep disorders have a significant impact on the cardiovascular system and have been linked with hypertension, congestive heart failure, coronary heart disease, atrial fibrillation and stroke. “We believe that sleep medicine is much more than just a diagnostic test,” said Dr. Loreto Sulit, a pulmonary specialist who completed his sleep medicine fellowship in 2005. “Sleep medicine is an important part of cardiopulmonary care. Our focus is to improve the compliance rates for our patients on Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy. We are excited to be working with a provider in the community committed to improving the quality of sleep medicine.”
“We’re excited about this new partnership and what it means to our community in Phoenix,” said Dr. Mark Stern, President of Tri-City Cardiology. “Sleep diagnosis and treatment is another service we want to provide to prevent or delay the onset of life threatening cardiac conditions. We are also looking forward to joint research initiatives that we hope will strengthen the sleep medicine field as a whole and help more people return to good health.”
